What is a Cataract?

So you just found out that you have cataracts. In your mind you imagine the worst: blindness, loss of independence, and darkness. However, there is no reason to be worried. Cataracts is a very common condition and is mostly the result of what I like to call the wear and tear of the body. In our eyes we have a natural lens that sits behind the color part of our eyes, the iris. This lens is clear like the lens of your glasses. As we get older this lens changes color become yellow, white or brown depending on the severity of the cataract. This discoloration blocks the light from reaching the back of your eye, the retina, causing blurriness and even blindness. The majority of the time with the help of glasses the blurriness caused by cataracts can be overcome giving you great vision. Although, as the cataract worsens, even glasses may not be enough to improve your vision, and it may be the time for cataract surgery. I know your wondering SURGERY!! SCARY!! but don't be alarmed it is a simple procedure that we discussed in our last post. The good news is that with surgery, this scary cataract will be removed, and you will no longer have to worry about it coming back. That's right! No more cataracts. Hope this helps and stay tuned for future posts on this subject.
