Should I be afraid of cataract surgery?

As a cataract surgeon I get asked this question all the time. We use our eyes for everything. A survey of people showed that most people would choose death over going blind. So when you hear the scary words that you have cataracts and need surgery I understand what you feel. So should you be afraid of cataract surgery? The answer is no! Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in America today. Majority of cataract surgeries occur in the outpatient medical setting meaning that after your surgery you get to go home. The average time for cataract surgery varies depending on the complexity of your cataract but on average it takes 20 minutes to perform a cataract surgery. After cataract surgery you will be on eye drops and will heal and be back to your regular routine in no time.
